Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency Unit

Provides short-stay crisis care for children and youth from BC and the Yukon Territories, who are experiencing acute mental health challenges. An interdisciplinary team provides emergency assessments and stabilization, diagnostic tests and procedures, and treatment planning.

The CAPE unit accepts patients by direct physician-to-physician referral only. If a child is in crisis, please access your closest local emergency department by presenting directly to hospital or calling 9-1-1.

Application Process
Physician-to-physician referral only. Children or youth in crisis should be transported to the nearest emergency department for initial assessment. In Vancouver, children may present to the BC Children's Hospital emergency department.

Age Restricted

Children and youth aged 16 and under in psychiatric crisis that need stabilization or emergency hospital intervention, medically stable and not under the influence of substances.
